James River State Park is located about 15 miles northeast of Lynchburg, VA. This park is open for day use and overnight camping, and features several miles of trails for biking, hiking and horseback riding. The park is listed as primitive, and visitors should be prepared to leave the urban amenities behind.

Totaling 288 acres of land, the Blackwater Creek natural park is the largest of the city parks. It is located in the heart of Lynchburg and has 12 miles of trails available for hiking, horseback riding and skating. There is access points to the park at Monticello Ave, Hill St., Thomson Dr. East Randolph St., Jefferson Park, Hollins Mill Rd. and Cabell St.
